3. Finally, apply early* so that you have coverage in place on your effective date.

*Medicare becomes effective on the first of every month, and if you are turning age 65 your effective date will be the first day of your birth month, unless you were born on the first, in which case you will be pre-dated to the first of the month preceding your birthdate.
